She Already Knew

“She Already Knew” (a poem)

It was like she already knew,
Ocean would pummel me,
Board would refuse me,
Lungs would be heaving,

It was like she already knew,
My back would spasm,
The swell would spatter,
Daylight would run out,

It was like she already knew,
I hadn't paddled out in months,
Wouldn't catch a single wave,
Would wake up with an ear ache,

It was like she already knew,
On the second avenue boardwalk,
When she passed me underneath,
The full moon rising and asked,

"Does your mother know you're out here?"
